He married Florence Caley in 1916, she died 1964 and he married Lisa Aase Hixon in August of 1967 at which time they moved to Rapid City. A brother survived Paul: Fred in Mitchell SD. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery Huron SD with his second wife Lisa.

This is the story told by Bill Hixson to the Gettysburg SD Newspaper in Lisa's obituary.

Bill Hixson, Paul's stepson, sent his family to higher ground and then went to the Thompson home in the Braeburn addition above Canyon Lake, where they watched the water in the creek behind the house. As the water kept rising they took some things and with the Thompson's in the car they drove two blocks when the car stalled. As Bill Hixson was helping his mother and stepfather into a house, the wall of water hit.

Bill Hixson saw his wife tumbling downstream in the flood and rushed to save her. He got his wife Phyllis onto a roof and watched the Thompson house disintegrate and go down stream.
The Thompson's disappeared and Lisa's body was found the next day, and her husband's body a few days later.
