Title A name given to the resource Daniel Richard MacArthur Description An account of the resource Daniel Richard MacArthur was born February 14, 1953 in Chicago Illinois to John MacArthur and Ruth Koch. He lived in Riverdale Illinois. Daniel and Michael Noefer were friends, they decided to sell what they owned in the Spring of 1972 and spend the summer camping and traveling the country. They hitchicked on Memorial Day weekend to visit a friend in Grand Forks ND. They were in the Black Hills when the June 9th flood struck, they lost clothing and possessions. They decided to stay and help, they were staying with a Red Cross worker, William Starrett. According to his mother " Mike was always helping everybody". When a call came on Saturday night June 17 of the high water, they jumped into a Van with four others to help. According to his mother, "When they got to the top of the road, it just disappeared and the Van sank to the bottom. The van sank in the Meade drainage and one person survived by kicking out the window to escape the submerged vehicle. Two others also survived but Daniel and Michael didn't, they were the only people who died in the second flooding in Rapid City. Daniel was a 1971 graduate of Thornton IL High School and was a member of the wrestling team. He met Michael Noefer at a mutual friends funeral in Janurary of 1972. Both boys were intensely interested in music, Michael played the guitar and wrote music and Daniel played the harmonica and wrote poetry. Daniel's father John who is a television news cameraman for NBC, said that his son would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. Daniel is survived by his parents and brother Craig age 21 in Riverdale IL. Daniel's body was shipped by to Catron Funeral home be buried at Cedar Park Cemetery Calumet IL. Services were held at 1:30 June 21, in the Chapel at 14338 Indiana Ave Riverdale IL. Daniel is survived by a sister Patricia 7 yrs old and a brother Craig 21 yrs old. A brother Cory preceded him in death. Born on April 29,1927 to Hans and Sophia Onstad in North Dakota. She married Royce Grass on November 19,1956. He died in 2002 and is buried in Black Hills National Cemetery. She worked at St. John's McNamara Hospital in Rapid City for several years in the blood bank. In the early 1960's she worked as a waitress at the Canyon Lake Club and later at the Red Garter Restaurant. In 1970 she started working as a waitress at Tally's, and was working there at the time of her death. On the night of the flood she and her daughter were at their house in Cleghorn Canyon when the water began to rise. Delores attempted to start her husbands truck but was swept away in the fast moving water. Survivors included two daughters: Linda Grass of Rapid City, and Nancy Luxem of Lynnwood, CA. Harris of Dows were held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Dows United Methodist Church with the Rev. E. E. Cuddleback officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery and the William Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Harris was killed in the flood at Rapid City, South Dakota on Saturday morning of June 10, 1972. At the time of his death he was on vacation in the Black Hills area with Mrs. Arlene Rawlins and her three daughters who also died in the flood. He was born in Webster County on April 19, 1922 and was the son of Ernest I. and Olivia Foster Harris. He was raised and educated near Popejoy and was graduated from high school there in 1940. For the past fourteen years he had been employed by the Farmers Grain and Lumber Co. of Dows. Mr. Harris is survived by two children, Mrs. Samuel L. (Beverly) Craig of Joliet, Illinois and Kerry Harris of Omaha, Nebraska. He is also survived by his father of Dows, two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Nadine) Jackson of Dows, Mrs. Carmen (Letha) Nichols of Radcliffe, three grandchildren and two half sisters, Mrs. Wilbur (Ruth) Babcock of Eagle Grove and Leota Phillips of Fresno, Calif. He was preceded in death by his mother.
